Fifteen years of client projects, mostly Java and Spring.
I started in 2011 with an apprenticeship as an application developer at encoway and stayed there until 2020, latterly as lead developer. Then five years at Fincon Reply, and since October 2025 I have been back at encoway, now with five years’ experience from another company.
The systems there are larger than the projects here, and they belong to clients, not to me. Over the years, design and lead work joined the development, and the best sign of it for me is a team that keeps moving without me.
Positions
Senior Developer, Technical Project Lead
Back at encoway, now with the technical lead on projects: designs, technical decisions and being answerable for both.
Senior Developer, Lead Developer
Five years at the second employer; the focus was on building large integrated systems, from planning to delivery.
Lead Developer
The first lead role: from the single application to the architecture and the development process, in my own team and on the client’s side alike.
Software Developer
The first years after the apprenticeship: development in client projects, web applications and extensions to existing business applications.
Apprentice application developer
Two and a half years of training, at the company and at vocational school. The final project standardised the data structure of a core component.
What I do in client projects
I don’t name individual client projects: working for clients means keeping their business to yourself. What remains is the kind of work.
Building
Full-stack development of web applications and their integration into systems that are already there, from the data model to the interface. Often that means replacing an application that has grown over the years and done its service.
Designing
Designing architectures, including the migration paths for data grown over years. Before that comes the analysis: which functional and technical requirements really exist.
Coordinating
Coordinating development teams, including mixed ones made up of our own developers and developers on the client side. Alongside that, I introduce development processes and agile methods and build up the infrastructure for continuous integration.
Teaching
Showing team members, client-side developers and apprentices the ropes, plus workshops on clean code, unit testing and software development. This is the part that lasts longest, because what someone has learnt stays with them after the project.
Collective
Monkey Squad
Alongside the employment I am part of a software collective. What the collective does is on its own site.
