One site, six designs.
The content is the same everywhere: the same projects, the same texts. Only the design changes. Every page has a “Design” button in the bottom right corner.
The choice lasts while you click through the site: every link stays in the chosen design. Nothing is stored – reopen the address and you are back on the default design. To share one, every design has its own addresses, such as tim-kruse.com/kundgebung/.
Why all this
Because it is fun. A portfolio only needs one calm design. But building the same content once as a tree slice, once as a capsule machine and once as a rally was too tempting to resist.
It is also a playground. This is where I try out whatever interests me at the moment. How far can I get without a single script? Does the idea hold up on a phone? And do you read the same text differently when it is on a cardboard sign? Not every design has to please everyone, and I enjoyed building each one.
The six designs
01Klartext
DefaultJust the text, nothing else.
02Trainingslog
Race bib, splits and elevation profile.
03Jahresringe
A slice of a tree, one ring per year.
04Kundgebung
Cardboard signs, a megaphone and a dino on a box.
05Kapselautomat
Turn the crank, out drops a project.
06Stadtmusikanten
The projects as a tower of animals outside the robbers’ house.
How it is built
- Content onceProjects and texts exist once, as files in the repository. Each design is its own frame and its own start page on top.
- No scriptNot a single script is shipped. The browser opens and closes the switcher by itself (an HTML popover), and the Town Musicians restack themselves in CSS.
- StaticEverything is built ahead of time and served as plain files from my own server in the EU. Fonts included, nothing from third-party servers.
